Bóbrka – World’s First Oil Drill
Museum of Oil and Gas Industry
The southeastern Poland is the cradle of the petroleum industry where the world’s first modern oil wells and first oil refineries were built by Ignacy Łukasiewicz in 1854. He was also the inventor of the first oil lamp. During 1854-1880 sixty oil wells were manually drilled here, some of them going down to the depth of 150 meters. Two of those – Franek and Janina, created in 1860, are still in operation today.
Museum in Bóbrka was established at the location of the world’s first oil drill. The Museum of Oil and Gas Industry, founded in 1961, was opened for the public in 1972. It is the only museum functioning in an area of an operating oil excavation plant. It documents development of oil industry and Polish accomplishments in this sector. Today we can still see an obelisk set up by Ignacy Łukasiewicz in 1872 to commemorate this event.
